A public talk and discussion exploring the design and creation of the civic community plaza at West 13th Avenue and Granville Street.

Attendees will hear from HCMA Architecture about the inspiration, design process, and placemaking objectives behind the plaza's distinctive gathering pods and public realm improvements. The plaza concept is inspired by shinrin-yoku, the Japanese practice of forest bathing, with trees being an integral part of the design. It is intended to evoke the sense of calm people experience beneath a forest canopy while encouraging opportunities for gathering, connecting, and engagement with public spaces.

The plaza features a series of semi-covered seating and gathering pods that mimic the experience of being sheltered beneath trees. Three pods are available for public use year-round, while a fourth functions as a seasonal patio for the Stable House Bistro. Installed as a semipermanent public space, the plaza is expected to remain in place for five years.
