Chinatown Storytelling Centre

At this iteration of Design Vancouver Forum, we invite a group of Asian creatives to speak about the notion and value of "Home 家", and how it affects on their practice. Design Vancouver Forum is about dialogue, about mingling, and about taking a creative journey to understand the world we live in, and how it might be — if we shaped it together.

Six speakers, speaking for eight minutes each on a design project, topic, personal story or life lesson. At the core of this event is the exchange of ideas - speaking to Identity, place and belonging. To enrich this experience and bring you what home feels like, we will be partnering with DD Mau to show what Home tastes like to some of us.

Moderator:
Pennylane Shen - Dazed and Confucius Consulting

Presenters:
Deseree Lo - Chef Dez Lo Catering & Consulting
Top Chef Canada Season 10 Runner-up / Founder of Just Roll With It, a frozen biscuit company.

Derek Gaw - MakerLabs
Derek likes to make things, both virtual and physical. During the day he helps people make things at MakerLabs, and at night he dreams of all the awesome things that could be made if only he had more tools.

Joe Fry - Hapa Collaborative
Joe is the founding principal of Hapa Collaborative and a contemporary voice for landscape architecture and urban design in Vancouver. With nearly 30 years of experience, Joe has dedicated himself to deepening the discussion around civic placemaking.

Pennylane Shen - Dazed and Confucius Consulting
Pennylane is an artist advisor, curator and educator. Since 2006, her team at Dazed & Confucius has offered individual consultations to over 1000 fine artists annually in addition to seminars on how to navigate the art industry to audiences worldwide

Ryan Mah - Black Rhino Creative
Ryan Mah, a documentary filmmaker and founding member of Black Rhino Creative, a fully BIPOC-owned company, creates work that amplifies diverse voices. His documentaries have aired on public broadcasters, transforming on-screen representation.

Tannis Ling - Bao Bei/Kissa Tanto/Meo
As one of Vancouver’s leading restaurateurs, Tannis Ling is the visionary behind three of Vancouver’s most iconic restaurants, all located in Vancouver’s historic Chinatown neighbourhood — the longstanding modern Chinese brasserie Bao Bei, the one-Michelin-starred Italian-Japanese fine dining destination Kissa Tanto, and the new cocktail and snack bar, Meo.
